11/19/2023 0 Comments Florida native constrictor snakes![]() ![]() Most boa constrictors that give birth to offspring are at least six feet in length. ![]() Boa constrictors become sexually mature and are able to mate between the age of three and four. In rare occasions, boa constrictors are known to have produced offspring asexually. Breeding usually occurs during the end of spring and the beginning of summer males are known to mate with multiple females during this time period. One main feature of the reproduction of boa snakes is that they give birth to live young. Afterwards, red tailed boas won’t eat for a long duration of time. It takes a boa 4-6 days to fully consume and digest itsįood. The method of attack for a boa is a simple one: it strikes the prey with its teeth and then, while the prey is still in shock, will begin to constrict the prey to death. Known as sneaky predators, boas will wait for long periods of time – in both day and night – until they have an opportunity to strike a prey. The rule of thumb is that, as a boa gets older and larger, so do the prey it eats. In general, young boas will stick to a diet of small mice, bats and lizards. Some boa constrictors have been known to consume mammals as large as ocelots. A few of the more common prey of a boa are rodents and birds. Scientists have yet to determine exactly why this is, but one theory is that it’s because the snake’s vision becomes seriously affected and this causes it extreme discomfort.Ī boa constrictor’s diet includes a great variety of different animals. It’s important to note that boas that are in a ‘shed cycle’ – a time when they skin is shedding – they become much more volatile. They kill their prey by constriction, as the name implies. This is because there is no venom in a boa constrictor. A bite from a boa constrictor, although powerful, is not lethal. They are nocturnal animals that will hunt for food at night and sleep, and hide, during the day.īoas will only strike when they feel as if they are in danger. Young boas are more likely to be found living in trees, as they are lighter, while older boas stick to the ground (usually due to their large weight and length). In general, boas will only be found together when they are undergoing the mating process otherwise, boas will live and hunt alone. One of the main aspects of boa constrictor’s behavior is that they are very solitary. Provided that the temperature doesn't drop too low. I don't know how long they can survive in Orlando, but it may be for a few years, However, I sometimes come across them in Florida - they are surely released pets. In Orlando, Tampa, or Jacksonville, temperatures usually get too cold to support these snakes. This is most common in southern FL, in and near the everglades, where the subtropical climate can support them. In Florida: Although native to South America, some boa constrictors live in Florida, and have established breeding self-sustaining populations. They are rarely seen in the wild most Florida boas are held captive and exist domestically and in zoos. Red tailed boas in Florida are found near the coast. Sometimes, a boa will take over the homes of the lesser mammals in the area. Within these distinct habitats boas are mainly found along rivers and streams. This is because boas prefer to live in a humid environment, as well as a habitat that has lot of tree color (hiding places). Primarily, boas are found to live in rainforests. One reason why boas have been able to thrive in various regions throughout the globe is because they are a very adaptive species in other words, they can exist, and exist well, is a number of different environments. This coloring is essential as camouflage for wild boas in jungles and forests. Most boas have what are known as ‘saddles’ – patterned spots that become more apparent in the tail of the snake. They usually have a base color that is brown or grey. The name red-tailed boa comes from the coloring of the boa constrictors. Red-tailed Boa, for example, tends to be one of the heavier species of boa, many of them having an average weight of around 20 kg. Furthermore, boa snakes can weigh up to 27 kg – their weight usually has a direct correlation with their length. Many female boas will exceed ten feet in length most males, on the other hand, tend to reach the modest length of seven feet. It can reach a maximum length of 13 feet (4 meters), with the female boa usually reaching a longer length than male boa. The Boa constrictor is one of the largest snake species in the world. ![]() 11/19/2023 0 Comments Mounty bounty![]() ![]() Seaman John Mills ( Richard Harris) accuses Bligh, the true pilferer, and Bligh has Mills brutally flogged for showing contempt to his superior officer, to the disgust of his patrician second-in-command, First Lieutenant Fletcher Christian ( Marlon Brando). The volume control knob on the Freya+ and the source selection buttons on both units are very shiny, which I know is a primitive small-brain sort of thing to point out, but in general I don’t find Schiit to be all that great about aesthetic details. Both my units are industrial silver, which I always prefer, although the Bifrost 2 does come in black. They both feature the curved sled front, where the front face and the top plate are one single bent sheet of aluminum that slides on to cover the bottom, sides, and back, where the guts reside. Overall, both the Freya+ and the Bifrost 2 exemplify Schiit Design Theory Principles. Historically, Schiit remotes have been a little on the boring plastic-afterthought side, but this is a nice little hefty thing. And finally, most important of all, there’s a remote, a very nice, heavy slab of aluminum with mute, volume, output mode selection, and input selection. The volume control uses a relay-switched stepped attenuator so there’s some fun clicking when it turns. There are a total of five inputs, two balanced and three unbalanced, along with one balanced output and two unbalanced outputs. Schiit claims the Freya+ tube stage is “whisper-silent,” and I found that to be more or less accurate, but tubes are never going to be perfect. They start making weird sounds they hiss, fart, burp, and make all other manner of very rude noises. Which also means that if the tubes ever go out, you can switch over to the solid-state mode while they’re being replaced. It functions in one of three modes: passive differential solid-state buffer for balanced outputs and differential tube gain for that sweet, syrupy tube sound. So to simplify just a bit, the Bitfrost 2 is a serious DAC with the ability to play a wide range of files, accepts USB, coax, and optical inputs, and works on most platforms. But truth be told, I’m not much of a digital person, and a lot of the technical jargon goes above my head, and I suspect that holds true for the majority of hi-fi listeners. It accepts formats up to 24/192 on all inputs (USB, coax, optical). The Bifrost2 also includes a remote control (for source switching and phase inversion) and balanced outputs, which is nice. It changed out the power supply, switched to a new 18-bit Analog Devices AD5781ARUZ D/A converter, swapped in that new custom USB, and made future updates easier. Beyond that, Schiit took the original Bifrost and gave it some upgrades. The Bifrost 2 also incorporates a new proprietary USB input, called Unison USB. ![]() Starting out and working my way in, the Bifrost 2 is a “True Multibit” DAC, employed in conjunction with Schiit’s custom in-house digital filter. I’ve wanted to review a full Schiit system for a while now, and recently settled for a nearly full Schiit system instead: the Freya+ preamplifier ($899) and the updated Bifrost 2 DAC ($699). It’s also all made in America, and its designs are admirably consistent across component categories. It’s an impressive line of products, and one that has largely remained in the sub-$1k range, which in itself is worth talking about. Or at least they have enough reasonably priced products to furnish a full system ( sans loudspeakers), whether it be on the desktop or full two-channel. ![]() 11/19/2023 0 Comments Lunar rover![]() ![]() "In space, what matters is what flies,” William "Red" Whittaker, research professor and planetary robotics specialist, said in a news release, “and soon you'll see irrefutable proof that what Carnegie Mellon has accomplished in planetary exploration matters a great deal.
